Overview

BMW 5 Series E61 -Overview

The E61 is the Touring (estate) body of BMW's fifth-generation 5 Series, produced from 2004 to 2010.

It shared the E60 saloon's controversial Chris Bangle-designed styling, iDrive infotainment system, and a wide range of engines spanning four-cylinder diesels, six-cylinder petrols and diesels, V8s, and the S85 V10 in the M5 Touring. A 2007 facelift brought revised styling and significant engine updates: the M54 petrol sixes were replaced by N52 then N53 units, and the M47 diesel gave way to the N47 with its well-documented timing-chain issues.

Market Intelligence

The E61 Touring generated 300+ real UK engine enquiries in 2025 [BMW-VERIFIED], concentrated on the N47 diesel and M57 six-cylinder units as these Tourings age into enthusiast ownership and maintenance cycles.

Best & Worst Engines

M57D30 (3.0-litre six-cylinder, 530d/535d) engine

Best Diesel Overall

M57D30 (3.0-litre six-cylinder, 530d/535d)

The M57 is one of BMW's most durable diesel engines -a cast-iron-block straight-six with proven 300,000-mile capability. The 535d's twin-turbo version delivers 286 bhp and 580 Nm of torque, transforming the E61 into a genuine autobahn cruiser. No N47 timing-chain worries here.

Who it's for: buyers who want diesel torque, six-cylinder refinement and bulletproof reliability.

M54B30 (3.0-litre straight-six, 530i, 2004–2005) engine

Best Petrol Overall

M54B30 (3.0-litre straight-six, 530i, 2004–2005)

The M54 is the last of BMW's classic naturally aspirated straight-sixes before the Valvetronic era -smooth, linear power delivery, no direct-injection complications, and a reputation for durability that rivals the M57 diesel. Later N52 and N53 units are more powerful but introduce additional complexity.

Who it's for: enthusiasts who want the purest E61 petrol driving experience.

N47D20 (2.0-litre diesel, 520d, 2007–2010) engine

Highest Risk

N47D20 (2.0-litre diesel, 520d, 2007–2010)

The N47's rear-mounted timing chain is this generation's defining diesel risk. Cold-start rattle is the early warning; a snapped chain means a full engine replacement. BMW extended the warranty on these engines for good reason. Pre-2007 M47-powered 520ds avoid this issue entirely.

Who it's for: buyers who want post-facelift 520d economy and are prepared for timing-chain maintenance.

S85B50 (5.0-litre V10, M5 Touring) engine

Most Expensive Failure

S85B50 (5.0-litre V10, M5 Touring)

The S85 V10 is one of BMW's most spectacular engines -and one of its most expensive to maintain. Rod bearing wear is the defining failure; replacement requires an engine-out service at £3,000–£5,000. A full engine replacement can exceed £15,000. Only 1,025 E61 M5 Tourings were built, making them rare but costly.

Who it's for: collectors with deep pockets who understand the S85's demands.

M57D30 530d (pre-2007) engine

Best Value

M57D30 530d (pre-2007)

The 530d delivers 218–235 bhp and 500+ Nm of torque with genuine 40+ MPG economy. It's the E61's sweet spot -six-cylinder refinement, M57 durability, and none of the N47's chain anxiety. Pre-2007 cars also avoid the more complex DPF systems of later models.

Who it's for: buyers who want the best all-round E61 without the V8's fuel bills or the N47's risks.

M54B25 / N52B25 (2.5-litre straight-six, 525i) engine

Most Overlooked

M54B25 / N52B25 (2.5-litre straight-six, 525i)

The 2.5-litre straight-six is often overlooked in favour of the 3.0-litre cars, but it's a genuine alternative -192–218 bhp, smooth six-cylinder character, and much better fuel economy than the 530i. It's the six-cylinder for buyers who don't need the full 3.0-litre punch.

Who it's for: buyers who want six-cylinder refinement without six-cylinder running costs.

The E61 rule

A £4,500–£7,000 M57 recon against a £4,000–£12,000 E61 Touring sits at 38–175% of the car's value. On a sub-£6,000 E61, that brushes our 70% BMW threshold -we'll honestly tell you to walk away. Against a well-kept £10,000+ example, the same recon drops to a routine 45–70% -a repair decision, not a financial one. Value the car first, and check for rust on the tailgate and rear arches.

Key Takeaways

  • Which E61 Costs Least To Own?

    520d (M47, pre-2007) -simple four-cylinder diesel, no timing-chain worries.

  • Which E61 Costs Most To Own?

M5 (S85 V10) -rod bearings, VANOS, throttle actuators; V10 running costs.

  • Which E61 Is Best Value?

    530d (M57, pre-2007) -six-cylinder torque, bulletproof M57, the sweet spot.
