Our Three Warranty Standards

Every specialist in our network must meet three core warranty standards. These are non-negotiable.

1	Written warranty	A documented warranty period on both the engine unit and the labour. Verbal assurances are not acceptable — see our vetting criteria.
2	Supply & fit coverage	The warranty must cover both the supplied unit and the fitting labour. A parts-only warranty is insufficient.
3	Minimum term	A minimum of 12 months or 12,000 miles (whichever comes first) on reconditioned units; used units may have shorter terms but must be explicitly stated.

What a Good Warranty Must Cover

A warranty is only as good as what it covers. We require five items to be explicitly included.

Supply of the unit. The warranty must cover the replacement engine or reconditioned unit itself, including any manufacturing defects.
Fitting labour. If the unit fails due to a fitting error, the labour to replace it must be covered.
Defects in materials or workmanship. The warranty must explicitly state that defects in materials or workmanship are covered.
Breakdown and failure. The warranty must cover sudden breakdown or failure of the supplied unit under normal use.
Consequential damage. Where the supplier's work causes damage to other components (e.g., cooling system, ancillaries), that damage must be covered.

Exclusions: What Isn't Covered

A good warranty also states what it does not cover. We expect specialists to be clear about exclusions.

Negligence or misuse. Damage caused by running the engine without oil, overheating due to coolant loss, or track use is not typically covered.
Pre-existing conditions. If a related component (e.g., turbocharger, injectors) fails due to a pre-existing issue not addressed during the replacement, this may be excluded.
Labour disputes. If the fitting specialist is not the warranty provider, the warranty may only cover the unit, not the fitting labour. We require supply & fit from the same specialist to avoid this.
Normal wear and tear. Components that wear out through normal use (e.g., belts, hoses, fluids) are not covered unless they are directly related to a covered failure.

What Warranty Is Worth

A long warranty is not always a good warranty. We assess warranties by their terms, not their length.

We see a significant range in warranty terms across the UK specialist market:

12 months / 12,000 miles — standard for reconditioned units, acceptable if coverage is comprehensive.
24 months / 24,000 miles — premium offering, often indicates higher confidence in the rebuild quality.
Used units — typically 3–6 months; we recommend avoiding used units with no warranty at all.

How to Verify a Specialist's Warranty

Before you agree to any work, ask these questions. A reputable specialist will answer them without hesitation.

Is the warranty in writing? If it's not written down, it does not exist. Ask for the full terms before you pay a deposit.
What exactly is covered? Ask for a list of covered components and systems. A good warranty will list what is included, not just what is excluded.
Who pays for labour if the unit fails? The specialist should cover both the supply and the labour. If they don't, you may end up paying twice.
How do I make a claim? A good specialist will have a documented claims process. Ask for it before you commit.
What happens if I sell the vehicle? Some warranties are transferable; others are not. If you plan to sell, check the transferability.

We guarantee that every specialist in our network meets our published criteria — including our warranty standards. We do not guarantee every job, but we do guarantee that we will not route enquiries to specialists who fail to meet these standards.

What if a specialist refuses to honour a warranty?

We track warranty claims through post-job surveys. If a specialist repeatedly refuses to honour valid claims, they are removed from our network. We also help mediate disputes where possible.

Are used engines covered by the same warranty?

Used engines typically have shorter warranty terms (3–6 months) and may have different exclusions. We require used units to have a stated warranty period, but we recommend reconditioned units for the best coverage.

What if the engine fails outside the warranty period?

If the engine fails outside the warranty period, you will need to cover the cost of repair or replacement. We recommend preventative maintenance to extend engine life — see our economics guides for advice.

Does BMW's manufacturer warranty cover replacement engines?

No. BMW's manufacturer warranty only covers the vehicle as originally supplied. Aftermarket replacement engines are covered by the supplier's warranty, not BMW's.
