Root cause:

The M52 and M54's cooling system is their Achilles' heel -plastic water pump impellers, thermostats, expansion tanks, and radiator end tanks become brittle with age and heat cycling. Overheating is the single biggest cause of M54 engine failure.

Root cause:

The M62 V8's timing chain guides are made of plastic that becomes brittle with age and heat cycling. When they fail, the timing chain can skip or snap, causing piston-to-valve contact and catastrophic engine failure. A rattling noise on cold start is the classic early warning.
