Overview

BMW Z4 E89 -Overview

The second-generation BMW Z4 (codenamed E89) was produced from February 2009 to August 2016, replacing the E85/E86 Z4.

Built at BMW's Regensburg plant in Germany, the E89 was the first Z Series model to feature a retractable two-piece aluminium hardtop roof, eliminating the need for separate roadster and coupé versions. The engine range launched with three naturally-aspirated six-cylinder petrols: the sDrive23i (2.5L, 204 PS), sDrive30i (3.0L, 258 PS) and twin-turbo sDrive35i (3.0L, 306 PS). A high-performance sDrive35is (340 PS) joined the range in March 2010. A November 2011 update replaced the N52 six-cylinders with turbocharged 2.0-litre N20 four-cylinders (sDrive20i and sDrive28i). An April 2013 facelift added the entry-level sDrive18i.

Thin-Data Summary

Thin-Data Fallback mode -one paragraph: The E89 Z4's engine range offers something for every buyer. The N52B30 (sDrive30i, 2009–2011) is widely regarded as the most characterful -a 3.0-litre naturally-aspirated straight-six with 258 PS, a glorious soundtrack and proven reliability. The N52B25 (sDrive23i) offers 204 PS with similar character but less power. The later N20B20B (sDrive28i, 2011–2016) delivers 245 PS from its 2.0-litre turbo four -more power than the sDrive23i and better economy than the sixes, though the four-cylinder note is less evocative. The N20B20A (sDrive20i) offers 184 PS -a capable entry point. The N54B30 (sDrive35i, 2009–2012) delivers 306 PS from its twin-turbo straight-six, but the N54 is known for fuel injector, HPFP and wastegate issues -it's the most complex and expensive E89 engine to maintain. The N54B30T0 (sDrive35is, 2010–2016) offers 340 PS with an overboost function -the ultimate E89, but with the same N54 vulnerabilities. For most buyers, the sDrive30i (N52) offers the best blend of character, reliability and driving enjoyment; the sDrive28i (N20) is the best modern choice for economy and daily usability.

The E89 rule

A £2,500–£4,500 N52 recon against a £4,000–£12,000 E89 sits at 21–113% of the car's value. On a sub-£5,000 high-mileage example, that brushes our 70% BMW threshold -we'll honestly tell you to walk away. Against a well-kept £8,000+ example, the same recon drops to 31–56% -a repair decision, not a financial one. For N54 cars, the calculus is different: these are performance roadsters where maintenance costs are part of the ownership experience.

Common Problems

E89 Engine Replacement Costs -By Engine and Condition

No Generation variance from the Engine Page baseline -no dedicated Engine Pages exist for these families yet, so baseline figures are drawn from the EM_Proprietary_Data Table A. Labour hours estimated at 10–14 hours for four- and six-cylinder engines, and 12–16 hours for the N54 due to additional turbo complexity. The E89's engine bay is relatively spacious but the N54's twin turbos add complexity.
