Overview
BMW X3 F25 -Overview
The F25 is the second generation of the BMW X3, unveiled at the 2010 Paris Motor Show and launched in Germany on 20 November 2010.
For this generation, BMW moved production from Austria to the Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, USA -the first X3 to be built in America. The F25 brought substantial improvements in design, technology, and the engine lineup, positioning it as a direct rival to the Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLK-Class. The engine range initially offered a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel (xDrive20d) and a 3.0-litre straight-six petrol (xDrive35i), later expanding to include four-cylinder petrols (N20), six-cylinder diesels (N57), and a rear-wheel-drive sDrive variant introduced in 2012. A significant June 2014 LCI facelift brought the B47 diesel engine, replacing the N47, and updated styling. The F25 was produced until August 2017, succeeded by the third-generation G01 X3.

Best & Worst Engines

Best Petrol Overall
N55B30 (xDrive35i, 3.0L straight-six, 302–306 bhp)
“BMW's N55 single-turbo straight-six is a masterpiece -smooth, responsive, and with a strong torque curve from 1,200 rpm. The xDrive35i offers effortless performance and the unmistakable six-cylinder soundtrack that defines BMW's petrol heritage.”
Who it's for: buyers who want six-cylinder performance and refinement.

Best Diesel Overall
N57D30 (xDrive30d, 3.0L straight-six diesel, 245–258 bhp)
“The N57 straight-six diesel is a masterpiece of refinement and efficiency -258 bhp, 560 Nm of torque, and genuine 40+ mpg capability. The xDrive30d offers the best blend of performance and economy in the F25 diesel range.”
Who it's for: buyers who want effortless torque and long-distance cruising capability.

Highest Risk
N47D20 (pre-LCI 18d/20d/28d, 2.0L diesel)
“The rear-mounted timing chain is the defining risk of the N47 -cold-start rattle is the warning, and a snapped chain means full replacement. The N47 remains the biggest single risk in the F25 range.”
Who it's for: buyers on a budget who must have documented chain-replacement history.

Most Expensive Failure
N57D30 (xDrive35d, 3.0L twin-turbo diesel, 309–313 bhp)
“The twin-turbo N57 offers spectacular performance -313 bhp and 630 Nm of torque -but the additional turbocharger adds complexity and potential failure points. A full replacement can exceed £8,000.”
Who it's for: buyers who want the most powerful diesel F25 and have budget for potential turbocharger repairs.

Best Value
B47D20 (post-LCI 18d/20d, 2.0L diesel, 150–190 bhp)
“The B47 is a significant improvement over the N47 -timing chain issues are far less frequent, and the engine is smoother and more refined. The post-LCI 20d offers the best blend of economy and reliability in the F25 range.”
Who it's for: buyers who want diesel economy without the N47's timing chain anxiety.

Most Overlooked
N52B30 (early xDrive28i, 3.0L naturally aspirated, 240 bhp)
“The N52-powered xDrive28i was only available from 2011–2012 before being replaced by the turbocharged N20 -but it's a gem. No turbos, no HPFP, just smooth, linear six-cylinder power with VANOS as the primary wear item. It's the last of BMW's great naturally aspirated straight-sixes in the X3.”
Who it's for: enthusiasts who want the simplicity of a naturally aspirated six.

BMW X3 F25 -Ownership Economics
The F25 rule
A £3,200–£5,500 N47 recon against a £4,000–£15,000 F25 sits at 21–138% of the car's value【EM-VERIFIED】. On a sub-£5,000 example, that brushes our 70% BMW threshold -we'll honestly tell you to walk away. Against a well-kept £8,000+ example, the same recon drops to 40–69% -a repair decision, not a financial one. Value the car first. For 35i and 35d cars, the higher retained values make replacement more viable.
Key Takeaways
Which F25 Costs Least To Own?
B47 20d (post-LCI) -efficient, reliable, and cheaper to maintain than the six-cylinder diesels.
Which F25 Costs Most To Own?
N57 35d -twin-turbo complexity and six-cylinder running costs add up.
Which F25 Is Best Value?
N55 35i -six-cylinder refinement, strong performance, and proven reliability.
