BMW 3 Series E90

Overview

BMW 3 Series E92 -Overview

The E92 is the coupé body of BMW's fifth-generation 3 Series, introduced in September 2006 as a two-door companion to the E90 saloon.

It shared the platform and most engines with the saloon but featured a lower, sleeker roofline and a wider track -a visual and dynamic step up from the E46 coupé it replaced. The E92 335i was a landmark model: the first 3 Series to feature a turbocharged petrol engine, the N54 twin-turbo straight-six. A March 2010 facelift (LCI) brought new engines including the N55 single-turbo six and the N57 diesel range. The E92 M3, introduced in 2008, remains the only M3 ever powered by a V8 -the high-revving S65. E92 production ended in June 2013, succeeded by the F32 4 Series.

Market Intelligence

The E92 Coupé generated 256+ real UK engine enquiries in 2025 [BMW-VERIFIED], concentrated on the 320d diesel and 335i petrol as the range reaches affordable enthusiast territory.

Best & Worst Engines

N52B30 (330i, 3.0L naturally aspirated, 268 bhp) engine

Best Petrol Overall

N52B30 (330i, 3.0L naturally aspirated, 268 bhp)

Widely regarded as one of BMW's most reliable engines -no turbos, no HPFP, just smooth, linear six-cylinder power with VANOS and Valvetronic as the only real wear items. The N52 is the engine that made BMW's reputation for naturally aspirated sixes.

Who it's for: enthusiasts who want the last of BMW's great naturally aspirated straight-sixes.

M57D30 (pre-LCI 330d, 3.0L, 231 bhp) engine

Best Diesel Overall

M57D30 (pre-LCI 330d, 3.0L, 231 bhp)

Cast-iron block, no rear-mounted timing chain to worry about, and a documented reputation for exceeding 300,000 miles with routine servicing. Thermostat housings and swirl flaps are its only real demands.

Who it's for: buyers who want bulletproof diesel-six motoring.

N47D20 (pre-2013 318d/320d, 2.0L diesel) engine

Highest Risk

N47D20 (pre-2013 318d/320d, 2.0L diesel)

The rear-mounted timing chain is the defining risk of the N47 -cold-start rattle is the warning, and a snapped chain means full replacement. The N47 remains the biggest single risk in the E92 range.

Who it's for: buyers on a budget who must have documented chain-replacement history.

N54B30 (335i, twin-turbo, 306 bhp) engine

Most Expensive Failure

N54B30 (335i, twin-turbo, 306 bhp)

HPFP failure leads to long cranks and limp mode; injector issues and turbo wastegate rattle often follow. The N54 is a tuner's dream but a wallet's nightmare without meticulous maintenance.

Who it's for: 335i buyers with deep pockets and full service history.

N57D30 (post-LCI 330d, 3.0L, 245 bhp) engine

Best Value

N57D30 (post-LCI 330d, 3.0L, 245 bhp)

Genuinely improved over the M57 on economy and refinement, with the single-turbo N57 avoiding the twin-turbo risks of later 335d variants. The sweet spot of the E92 diesel range.

Who it's for: buyers who want modern diesel-six efficiency without the N47's timing chain anxiety.

S65B40 (M3, 4.0L V8, 414 bhp) engine

Most Overlooked

S65B40 (M3, 4.0L V8, 414 bhp)

The only V8 ever fitted to an M3 -high-revving, sonorous, and utterly addictive. Rod bearings are the known weak point, but the E9x M3 is a future classic. For many, it's the ultimate E92.

Who it's for: collectors and enthusiasts who want the pinnacle of the E92 range.

The E92 rule

A £3,200–£5,500 N47 recon against a £3,000–£12,000 E92 sits at 27–183% of the car's value【EM-VERIFIED】. On a sub-£4,000 example, that brushes our 70% BMW threshold -we'll honestly tell you to walk away. Against a well-kept £8,000+ example, the same recon drops to 40–69% -a repair decision, not a financial one. Value the car first. For M3 cars, the economics are different -collector values justify the higher costs.

Key Takeaways

  • Which E92 Costs Least To Own?

N52 330i -simple naturally aspirated six, no turbos, fewer failure modes.

  • Which E92 Costs Most To Own?

S65 M3 -rod bearings, throttle actuators and V8 complexity add up fast.

  • Which E92 Is Best Value?

    M57 330d (pre-LCI) -bulletproof diesel-six without the N47's timing chain anxiety.

Common Problems

E92 Engine Replacement Costs -By Engine and Condition

No Generation variance from the EM_Proprietary_Data baseline figures -E92 Coupé shares the E9x platform with the E90 saloon, with similar engine-bay access, so costs are inherited directly per the Authority Model, with no divergence note required.
