Overview

BMW 2 Series F22 -Overview

The F22 is the first generation of the BMW 2 Series coupé, launched in November 2013 as the successor to the E82 1 Series coupé.

Designed by Christopher Weil, it introduced a new naming convention for BMW's compact rear-wheel-drive models, reviving the spirit of the legendary BMW 2002. Built on a shortened version of the F30 3 Series platform, the F22 features a 50:50 weight distribution, MacPherson strut front suspension, and a five-link rear setup. The engine line‑up evolved significantly: the launch N20 four‑cylinder and N55 six‑cylinder were replaced by the more modern B48 and B58 from 2016. The high‑performance M2 (F87) arrived in 2015, with the M2 Competition following in 2018. Production ended in 2021.

Best & Worst Engines

B48B20 (230i) engine

Best Value

B48B20 (230i)

The B48 four-cylinder delivers 248 bhp -more than the N20 it replaced -with better reliability and fuel economy. It's the sensible choice that doesn't feel sensible: 0–60 in 5.6 seconds and a genuine 40+ mpg on a run.

Who it's for: buyers who want daily-driver usability with genuine performance.

N20B20 (early 220i/228i, pre‑2015) engine

Highest Risk

N20B20 (early 220i/228i, pre‑2015)

The N20's timing chain guide wear is well-documented -a failure that can destroy the engine. BMW revised the guides in 2015, but early cars remain a gamble without documented chain work. The plastic charge pipe is another common failure point.

Who it's for: only buyers with documented timing chain replacement or post‑2015 cars.

S55 (M2 Competition) engine

Most Expensive Failure

S55 (M2 Competition)

The S55 is a high‑performance version of the N55 with twin turbos and a closed‑deck block. It's robust for what it is, but parts are expensive, and a full engine replacement can exceed £10,000. The M2 CS's 444 bhp variant is even more costly.

Who it's for: buyers with deep pockets who want the ultimate F22‑based M car.

N55B30T0 (M2, 2015–2018) engine

Most Overlooked

N55B30T0 (M2, 2015–2018)

The original M2's N55 is often overshadowed by the later S55‑powered Competition, but it's a more characterful engine -less clinical, more engaging. It's also cheaper to buy and maintain than the S55 cars.

Who it's for: buyers who want M2 performance on a tighter budget and prefer character over outright pace.

The F22 rule

A £4,500–£7,000 B58 recon against a £10,000–£20,000 M240i sits at 23–70% of the car's value -at the upper end, that brushes our 70% BMW scrap threshold. Against a £15,000+ example, the same recon drops to 30–47% -a repair decision, not a scrap question. For an N20 228i at £8,000–£12,000, a £2,500–£4,500 recon is 21–56% -borderline but often viable for a well‑kept example. Value the car first; if it's a pre‑2015 N20 without timing chain history, walk away or budget for the work immediately.
