Overview

BMW X5 G05 -Overview

The G05 is the fourth generation of the BMW X5, unveiled online on 6 June 2018 and entering production in August 2018 as the successor to the F15 X5.

Built on the Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform shared with the G11 7 Series and G30 5 Series, the G05 introduced a range of new engines -including the B58 replacing the N55, and the S63-powered X5 M -along with a 48V mild-hybrid system on later models. A facelift (LCI) entered production in March 2023, bringing updated B58, B57 and S68 engines.

Market Intelligence

As a current-generation model (2018–present), the G05 is still establishing its long-term reliability profile -but the B58 engine is already developing a reputation as one of BMW's most dependable modern six-cylinders, while the N63 V8 remains the most complex option.

Thin-Data Summary

The G05's engine range is modern, efficient and broadly dependable. The B58 3.0-litre straight-six (xDrive40i, 2018–present) is the standout -329–381 bhp, smooth power delivery, and a reputation for bulletproof reliability that has made it one of BMW's most dependable modern engines. The B57 3.0-litre diesel six (xDrive30d/xDrive40d) is the torque king -261–352 bhp and up to 700 Nm of effortless pulling power, with mild-hybrid assistance on later models. The N63 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 (xDrive50i/M50i) delivers 456–523 bhp but retains the hot-vee architecture that can lead to heat-related issues on high-mileage examples. The S68 in the M60i (2023–present) replaces the N63 with an updated design, while the S63 in the X5 M offers 591–617 bhp but demands meticulous maintenance. The plug-in hybrids (xDrive45e, xDrive50e) combine the B58 with an electric motor for 389–483 bhp system output. If you're buying a G05, the B58 petrol is the sensible choice; the B57 diesel is for high-mileage drivers; the N63/S63 V8s demand deeper pockets.

The G05 rule

A £4,000–£7,000 B58 recon against a £35,000 G05 sits at 11–20% of the car's value -well within our 70% BMW threshold. Against a £60,000 example, the same recon drops to 7–12% -a routine maintenance decision. On a G05, replacement almost always makes sense. The V8 and PHEV costs are higher but still proportional to the car's value.

Key Takeaways

  • Which G05 Costs Least To Own?

B58 xDrive40i -simpler than the V8, lower running costs.

  • Which G05 Costs Most To Own?

    N63 M50i -hot-vee V8 with expensive heat-related failures.

  • Which G05 Is Best Value?

    B58 xDrive40i -six-cylinder performance without the V8 bills.
