Overview

BMW X1 F48 -Overview

The second-generation BMW X1 (codenamed F48) was unveiled at the September 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show and entered production in June 2015.

Built on BMW's modular front-wheel-drive UKL2 platform, the F48 marked a significant departure from its rear-wheel-drive predecessor, the E84. The engine range launched with 1.5-litre B38 three-cylinder and 2.0-litre B48 four-cylinder petrols, alongside B37 and B47 diesels. A plug-in hybrid xDrive25e joined the range in 2020. A facelift (LCI) was introduced in 2019. Production ended in June 2022, replaced by the third-generation U11 X1.

Best & Worst Engines

B48A20A/B -20i/25i (2015–2022) engine

Best Petrol Overall

B48A20A/B -20i/25i (2015–2022)

The B48 2.0-litre is BMW's most refined four-cylinder -smooth, responsive and genuinely reliable. The 20i offers 178–192 PS; the 25i delivers 231 PS. Both are a significant step up from the older N20.

Who it's for: buyers who want the best all-round F48 petrol.

B47C20B -20d (2015–2022) engine

Best Diesel Overall

B47C20B -20d (2015–2022)

The B47 is a significant improvement over the N47 -timing chain issues are far less common, and EGR cooler problems are well-documented and manageable. The 20d's 190 PS offers excellent economy without sacrificing performance.

Who it's for: buyers who want diesel economy with genuine pace.

B37C15A -16d engine

Highest Risk

B37C15A -16d

The 1.5-litre three-cylinder diesel is the least powerful engine in the F48 range -116 PS is marginal for an SUV of this weight. It's also the least common, meaning parts and specialist knowledge are harder to find.

Who it's for: buyers who prioritise fuel economy above all else.

B47B20 -25d engine

Most Expensive Failure

B47B20 -25d

The 25d is the range-topping diesel with 231 PS -twin-turbo complexity adds significant maintenance costs. Injector and turbo repairs are more expensive than on the single-turbo 20d.

Who it's for: buyers who want diesel performance and are prepared for the bills.

B48A20A -20i engine

Best Value

B48A20A -20i

The 20i is the most common F48 petrol -reliable, efficient and well-supported. A £2,800–£4,500 recon makes sense against an £8,000–£22,000 vehicle.

Who it's for: buyers who want the most cost-effective F48 ownership.

B38A15A -18i engine

Most Overlooked

B38A15A -18i

The 1.5-litre three-cylinder is often overlooked by buyers chasing bigger engines -but it's a genuinely charming unit, reliable and surprisingly perky in the F48's lightweight UKL2 chassis. Perfect for urban driving.

Who it's for: buyers who want low running costs and don't need four-cylinder pace.

The F48 rule

A £2,800–£4,500 B48 recon against an £8,000–£22,000 F48 sits at 13–56% of the car's value -within our 70% BMW threshold. Even against a high-mileage £6,000 example, the same recon is 47–75% -assess carefully. The F48 holds value well enough that engine replacement is almost always viable.

Common Problems

F48 Engine Replacement Costs -By Engine and Condition

No Generation variance from the Engine Page baseline -no dedicated Engine Pages exist for these families yet, so baseline figures are drawn from the EM_Proprietary_Data Table A. Labour hours estimated at 8–12 hours for three-cylinder engines and 10–14 hours for four-cylinder engines. The UKL2 platform's transverse layout affects labour access.

Core Variants

Scope note: All variants listed are X1 F48 only. sDrive denotes front-wheel drive; xDrive denotes all-wheel drive. The xDrive25e plug-in hybrid (2020–2022) combines a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor for 220 PS system output.
