Overview

BMW M5 E34 -Overview

The E34 is the second generation of the BMW M5, produced from September 1988 to August 1995.

Hand-built at BMW M GmbH in Garching, Germany, it succeeded the E28 M5 and established the M5 as the definitive sports saloon. The E34 M5 was powered by the S38 straight-six engine -an evolution of the M88 from the M1 supercar -and is the last M5 to feature an engine with a direct motorsport lineage. Early cars (1988–1992) used the 3.5/3.6-litre S38B36, while a 3.8-litre S38B38 was introduced in late 1991. A five-door Touring (estate) version was introduced in 1992, available only in left-hand drive, with 891 examples built. The E34 M5 was available with a five-speed manual transmission (S38B36 and early S38B38 cars) and later a Getrag six-speed manual.

Best & Worst Engines

S38B36 3.6-litre (1988–1992) engine

Best Overall

S38B36 3.6-litre (1988–1992)

The S38B36 produces 315 bhp and 360 Nm of torque, with a reputation for durability that slightly exceeds the later 3.8 -the shorter stroke means less stress on bearings and a more robust bottom end. It's the last M5 engine with a direct motorsport lineage, and its six individual throttle bodies and 6,900 rpm redline produce a howl that few modern engines can match.

Who it's for: buyers who want the ultimate durability from an E34 M5.

S38B38 3.8-litre (1991–1995) engine

Best Performance

S38B38 3.8-litre (1991–1995)

The S38B38 produces 340 bhp and 400 Nm, cutting the 0-62 mph time from 6.3 to 5.9 seconds. It offers a more urgent, muscular character than the 3.6, and is the engine found in the ultra-rare M5 Touring. Both engines share the S38's legendary traits: six individual throttle bodies, a 6,900 rpm redline, and a mechanical valve train that demands attention.

Who it's for: buyers who want the ultimate E34 M5 performance -and can afford the slightly higher maintenance.

The E34 M5 rule

A £5,000–£9,000 S38 recon against a £10,000–£40,000 E34 M5 sits at 13–90% of the car's value【BMW-QUOTE】. On a sub-£12,000 example, that brushes our 70% BMW threshold -we'll honestly tell you to walk away. Against a well-kept £20,000+ example, the same recon drops to 25–45% -a repair decision, not a financial one. The E34 M5's rising collector values mean a well-maintained car will justify engine work.
