Overview
The E34 is the second generation of the BMW M5, produced from September 1988 to August 1995. Hand-built at BMW M GmbH in Garching, Germany, it succeeded the E28 M5 and established the M5 as the definitive sports saloon. The E34 M5 was powered by the S38 straight-six engine — an evolution of the M88 from the M1 supercar — and is the last M5 to feature an engine with a direct motorsport lineage.
Early cars (1988–1992) used the 3.5/3.6-litre S38B36, while a 3.8-litre S38B38 was introduced in late 1991.
