Overview
BMW 6 Series F06 -Overview
The BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé F06 is the four-door fastback variant of the third-generation 6 Series, launched in June 2012 at the Geneva International Motor Show.
Designed by Nader Faghihzadeh, the F06 shares its platform with the F10 5 Series and features a wheelbase 4.6 inches longer than the F13 coupé, with a 4+1 seating arrangement. The engine range includes the N55 straight-six petrol in the 640i, the N63 V8 in the 650i, the N57 straight-six diesel in the 640d, and the S63 V8 in the M6. A 2015 facelift brought subtle styling updates while the engine line-up remained unchanged. Production ended in 2018, succeeded by the 8 Series Gran Coupé.

Best & Worst Engines

Best Diesel Overall
N57D30B (640d, 2011–2018)
“The 3.0-litre straight-six diesel produces 313 PS and 630 Nm -effortless, refined, and with the kind of torque that makes the F06 a genuine long-distance cruiser. The N57 is chain-driven and proven across the BMW range. In the Gran Coupé, it's the diesel you buy if you want six-cylinder refinement without V8 running costs.”
Who it's for: buyers who want effortless torque and 40+ mpg potential.

Best Petrol Overall
N55B30A (640i, 2011–2018)
“The N55 is BMW's single-turbo straight-six that replaced the N54 -320 PS, twin-scroll turbo, and significantly more reliable than its predecessor. The F06 was one of the last models to receive the N55 before the B58 took over. It's the petrol you can buy without HPFP anxiety.”
Who it's for: buyers who want six-cylinder petrol performance without the N63's V8 running costs. (Model-wide: B58B30 in the G30/G32 sets the modern benchmark -see G30 →)

Highest Risk
N63B44A / N63B44B (650i, all years)
“The hot-vee V8 suffers from heat-related failures -valve stem seals, turbo coolant lines, and battery drain are common. The N63 has a well-earned reputation for high ownership costs. The 650i is fast, but it's expensive to keep fast.”
Who it's for: buyers with deep pockets who want V8 performance and are prepared for the maintenance bills.

Most Expensive Failure
S63B44B (M6)
“The S63 is the high-performance version of the N63 -560–575 PS, twin-turbo, and even more complex. Valve stem seal failure, turbocharger wear, and the 7-speed DCT transmission all add to the ownership cost. A full engine replacement sits at £8,000–£14,000.”
Who it's for: M6 buyers who budget for high-end maintenance and have a specialist they trust.

Best Value
N57D30B (640d, 2011–2018)
“The 640d offers 313 PS, 630 Nm, and 40+ mpg potential -it's the most efficient engine in the range and the cheapest to replace of the six-cylinder options. The N57 is robust, the chain is accessible, and the F06's weight doesn't overwhelm it.”
Who it's for: buyers who want the best balance of performance, economy, and reliability.

Most Overlooked
N55B30A (640i, 2011–2018)
“The 640i is often overshadowed by the V8 650i and the M6, but the N55 straight-six is the most dependable petrol engine in the range. 320 PS and 450 Nm is more than enough for the F06's grand touring mission, and running costs are significantly lower than the V8s.”
Who it's for: buyers who want petrol refinement without the V8's running costs.

BMW 6 Series F06 -Ownership Economics
The F06 rule
A £4,500–£7,000 N57 recon against a £8,000–£25,000 F06 sits at 18–87% of the car's value. On a sub-£10,000 F06, that brushes our 70% BMW threshold -we'll honestly tell you to walk away. Against a well-kept £20,000+ low-mileage example, the same recon drops to a routine 22–35% -a repair decision, not a financial one. For an N63 650i or S63 M6, the economics are less favourable -value the car first, and always budget for N63-specific maintenance.
