BMW 5 Series G61 -Overview
The eighth-generation BMW 5 Series (codenamed G60 for the saloon, G61 for the Touring estate) was unveiled in 2023, with the Touring version revealed in February 2024.
Production of the G61 began in March 2024. Built on BMW's CLAR platform, the G61 represents a significant evolution over the G31 -offering a range of electrified powertrains including 48V mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fully electric (i5) options. The engine range includes 2.0-litre B48 four-cylinder petrols, 3.0-litre B58 six-cylinder petrols, B47 four-cylinder and B57 six-cylinder diesels, plus the S68 V8 in the M5 Touring. The G61 is the sixth generation of the 5 Series Touring, continuing a lineage that traces back to the E34 of the late 1980s.

Best & Worst Engines

Thin-Data Summary
“Thin-Data Fallback mode -one paragraph: The G61 Touring offers BMW's most advanced engine range to date. The B48B20V (520i/530e) is the most common four-cylinder -smooth, efficient and reliable, with the 530e adding plug-in hybrid capability for company-car tax benefits. The B58B30S (540i/550e) is the pick of the six-cylinders -silky-smooth, effortlessly powerful and genuinely reliable, with the 550e's 489 PS system output offering near-M5 performance with hybrid efficiency. The B47D20B (520d) remains a strong diesel choice -improved over the earlier N47 and B47 variants, with EGR cooler maintenance the primary concern. The i5 eDrive40 and i5 M60 are BMW's most advanced EVs, offering 340–394 PS with excellent range. The S68B44A in the M5 Touring is a 4.4-litre V8 plug-in hybrid producing 489 PS -a future classic but expensive to maintain. For most buyers, the 530e PHEV or 520d diesel represent the best balance of performance, running costs and real-world usability.”
Who it's for:

BMW 5 Series G61 -Ownership Economics
The G61 rule
A £3,200–£5,500 B47 recon against a £35,000–£65,000 G61 sits at 5–16% of the car's value -well within our 70% BMW threshold. The G61 is a premium vehicle that holds value well; engine replacement is almost always viable. For the M5 Touring, the calculus is different -these are high-performance vehicles where maintenance costs are part of the ownership experience.
Common Problems

G61 Engine Replacement Costs -By Engine and Condition
No Generation variance from the Engine Page baseline -no dedicated Engine Pages exist for these families yet, so baseline figures are drawn from the EM_Proprietary_Data Table A. Labour hours estimated at 10–14 hours for four-cylinder engines, 12–16 hours for six-cylinder engines, and 16–22 hours for the M5's S68 V8 due to additional complexity. Electric i5 variants have no engine replacement costs -battery replacement is a separate consideration.
