The third-generation BMW 5 Series (E34) was produced from November 1987 to June 1996, replacing the E28 and later succeeded by the E39. Initially launched as a four-door sedan in January 1988, the E34 also introduced a "Touring" estate body style in September 1992 — a first for the 5 Series. The E34 was the first 5 Series to offer all-wheel drive (525iX) and the first to feature a V8 engine (M60).

The engine range spanned four-cylinder, six-cylinder and V8 petrols, plus turbo-diesel six-cylinders. The M5 continued with the high-revving S38 straight-six.
