Overview
BMW 5 Series E28 -Overview
The E28 is the second generation of the BMW 5 Series, produced from 1981 to 1988.
Designed by Claus Luthe, it succeeded the E12 and introduced a more aerodynamic, modern silhouette. The E28 was initially offered with straight-four and straight-six petrol engines. In 1983, the 524td became the first BMW car to be powered by a diesel engine. The E28 was also the first 5 Series with the centre console angled towards the driver and the first to offer anti-lock brakes (ABS). The first BMW M5 was built on the E28 platform, powered by the M88/3 engine derived from the M1 supercar. The E28 was replaced by the E34 in 1988. In total, 722,328 E28s were produced.

Best & Worst Engines

Best Value
M20B20 (520i)
“The 2.0-litre M20 six-cylinder delivers 125 bhp -enough for everyday driving with six-cylinder smoothness and better fuel economy than the larger M30s. Parts are cheap and widely available. It's the sensible choice that still feels special.”
Who it's for: buyers who want six-cylinder refinement on a budget.

Highest Risk
M88/3 (M5 Euro)
“The 286 bhp M88/3 is a masterpiece -derived from the M1 supercar -but it's high-strung and expensive to maintain. Timing chain guides, valve adjustments, and cooling system work are all costly. Parts are becoming increasingly scarce.”
Who it's for: collectors and enthusiasts who understand the cost of ownership.

Most Expensive Failure
M88/3 & S38B35 (M5)
“A full M88/3 or S38B35 engine rebuild can exceed £8,000. Timing chain guide failure is catastrophic and requires an engine-out rebuild. Parts are rare and specialist labour is essential. The M5 is a legend -but it's an expensive one to keep on the road.”
Who it's for: buyers with deep pockets who want one of the greatest saloon cars ever made.

Most Overlooked
M20B27 (525e/528e)
“The 'eta' engine is often dismissed as underpowered -121–129 bhp from 2.7 litres -but it's designed for torque and economy, not revs. It's famously durable, with many examples exceeding 200,000 miles. It's the sensible choice that gets overlooked by those chasing power.”
Who it's for: buyers who prioritise longevity and economy over outright performance.

BMW 5 Series E28 -Ownership Economics
The E28 rule
A £2,500–£4,500 M30 recon against a £3,000–£10,000 E28 sits at 25–150% of the car's value -on a sub‑£4,000 example, that brushes our 70% BMW scrap threshold. Against a well‑kept £6,000+ example, the same recon drops to 42–75% -borderline but often viable for a cherished car. For an M5 at £15,000+, a £5,000–£9,000 recon is 33–60% -a serious decision, but these are appreciating classics. Value the car first; if it's a 518i without service history, walk away.
