Overview
The F34 is a five-door fastback version of the F30 3 Series, launched at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show as BMW's answer to buyers wanting the elevated driving position and practicality of an SUV with the dynamics of a saloon. Built on the long‑wheelbase F30 platform, it offers significantly more rear legroom and headroom than the standard 3 Series, with a 2,920 mm wheelbase and a liftback tailgate. The engine line‑up mirrored the F30's: four‑cylinder and six‑cylinder turbocharged petrols (N20, N55) and diesels (N47, N57).
A 2016 Life Cycle Impulse brought the B‑series engine family (B48, B58, B47) with improved efficiency and reliability. Production ended in early 2020, with no direct successor — the F34 was a one‑generation model.

04Best & Worst Engines
Best Value
B48B20 (320i/330i)
“The B48 four‑cylinder delivers up to 252 bhp — more than the N20 it replaced — with better reliability and fuel economy. In the F34's spacious body, it's the sensible choice that doesn't feel sensible.”
Who it's for: buyers who want daily‑driver usability with genuine performance.
Highest Risk
N20B20 (pre‑2015 320i/328i)
“The N20's timing chain guide wear is well‑documented — a failure that can destroy the engine. BMW revised the guides in 2015, but early cars remain a gamble without documented chain work. The plastic charge pipe is another common failure point.”
Who it's for: only buyers with documented timing chain replacement or post‑2015 cars.
Most Expensive Failure
N57D30T1 (335d xDrive)
“The twin‑turbo 3.0‑litre diesel is a masterpiece of torque delivery, but timing chain issues and swirl flap failures are well‑documented. A full engine replacement can exceed £8,000, and the xDrive system adds complexity to the removal process.”
Who it's for: buyers who want effortless torque and are prepared for the running costs.
Most Overlooked
N55B30 (335i, pre‑LCI)
“The N55 is often overshadowed by the later B58, but it's a characterful six‑cylinder with a proven track record. Oil leaks and charge pipe failures are its main weaknesses, but these are well‑understood and manageable. It's often cheaper to buy than the 340i.”
Who it's for: buyers who want six‑cylinder character on a tighter budget.

The F34 rule
A £4,500–£7,000 B58 recon against a £10,000–£18,000 340i sits at 25–70% of the car's value -at the upper end, that brushes our 70% BMW scrap threshold. Against a £15,000+ example, the same recon drops to 30–47% -a repair decision, not a scrap question. For an N20 328i at £7,000–£12,000, a £2,500–£4,500 recon is 21–64% -borderline but often viable for a well‑kept example. Value the car first; if it's a pre‑2015 N20 or N47 without timing chain history, walk away or budget for the work immediately.

N20/N26
Timing Chain Guide Wear (Pre‑2015)
Affected models:
Typical failure mileage:
Root cause:
Our Recommendation
If you're buying a pre‑2015 N20 F34, look for documented timing chain work or budget £1,200–£2,500 immediately. A preventative chain and tensioner replacement is dramatically cheaper than the £2,500+ replacement that follows a failure. On a car worth under £8,000, evaluate carefully before committing.
N55
Oil Leaks & Charge Pipe Failure (335i)
Affected models:
Typical failure mileage:
Root cause:
Our Recommendation
If your N55 develops oil leaks or a loss of boost, have it inspected immediately -a £500–£1,200 gasket and charge pipe repair is far cheaper than the £4,000+ replacement that follows a catastrophic failure. On a 335i worth over £12,000, this is a manageable cost of ownership.
N47/N47N
Timing Chain (Pre‑2015 Diesel)
Affected models:
Typical failure mileage:
Root cause:
Our Recommendation
At the first sign of cold‑start rattle, get the chain inspected immediately -a £650–£1,800 preventative repair is dramatically cheaper than the £3,200+ replacement that follows if ignored. On an F34 worth under £8,000, this decision alone determines whether the car stays economically viable.
N57
Timing Chain & Swirl Flap Failure (330d/335d)
Affected models:
Typical failure mileage:
Root cause:
Our Recommendation
If you're buying an N57‑powered F34, look for documented timing chain work and swirl flap delete -£1,500–£3,000 for preventative work is cheaper than the £5,000+ replacement that follows a failure. On a 335d, this is a cost of ownership you should budget for.
