Overview

BMW 3 Series E21 -Overview

The BMW E21 is the first generation of the BMW 3 Series, a range of compact executive cars produced from June 1975 to December 1983.

Designed by Paul Bracq, the E21 replaced the BMW 02 Series and was exclusively built as a two-door coupé (with Baur convertibles available from 1978–1981). At launch, all models used carburetted four-cylinder M10 engines of 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 litres; fuel injection was introduced in late 1975 on the 320i. In 1977, a carburetted inline six-cylinder M20 engine (the 320/6) replaced both the 320 and 320i in many markets, and the range-topping 323i (fuel-injected 2.3-litre six) arrived in 1978. The E21 was superseded by the E30 in 1982.

Market Intelligence

The E21-generation 3 Series is now a modern classic; enquiries are concentrated on M10 carburettor setup, M20 timing belt replacement, and rust remediation, with values ranging from £4,000 for entry-level 316 examples to £20,000+ for well-preserved 323is.

Best & Worst Engines

The E21's M10 four-cylinder and M20 six-cylinder engines are both robust, well-understood units with strong parts availability through the classic BMW specialist network. The M10 2.0-litre fuel-injected 320i (125 bhp) offers the best balance of performance and running costs -it's the most common, best-supported, and delivers the smooth, characterful four-cylinder experience that defined the early 3 Series. The 316 (90 bhp) is underpowered for the E21's 1,020 kg kerb weight, while the 323i (143 bhp) delivers genuine six-cylinder refinement but adds complexity and higher running costs. engine

Overall Verdict

Who it's for: For most buyers, a well-maintained 320i with documented carburettor or injection service history is the smartest purchase.

The E21 rule

A £5,000–£8,500 323i recon against a £6,000–£10,000 E21 sits at 50–140% of the car's value -on a sub-£7,000 example, that brushes our 70% BMW threshold, and we'll honestly tell you to walk away. Against a well-kept £15,000+ example, the same recon drops to a routine 33–57% -a repair decision, not a financial one. Value the car first.
