Overview

BMW X3 G01 -Overview

The BMW X3 G01 is the third generation of BMW's compact luxury crossover SUV, unveiled in June 2017 with production commencing in August 2017.

Built on BMW's CLAR platform, the G01 brought significant improvements in interior space, technology, and driving dynamics over its F25 predecessor. Designed by Calvin Luk, the G01 is manufactured at BMW's Spartanburg plant in the USA and Rosslyn plant in South Africa. The engine range includes B48 four-cylinder petrols (sDrive20i, xDrive20i, xDrive30i, and the xDrive30e plug-in hybrid), the B58 six-cylinder petrol in the M40i, the S58 in the X3 M and X3 M Competition, and B47/B57 diesels ranging from the sDrive18d to the M40d. A facelift (LCI) was introduced in 2021, and production ended in 2024.

Best & Worst Engines

B57D30B (xDrive30d, 2017–2024) engine

Best Diesel Overall

B57D30B (xDrive30d, 2017–2024)

The 3.0-litre straight-six diesel produces 265 PS and 620 Nm -effortless, refined, and with the kind of torque that makes the G01 a genuine long-distance cruiser. The B57 is chain-driven and proven across the BMW range. In the X3, it's the diesel you buy if you want six-cylinder refinement without M40d running costs.

Who it's for: buyers who want effortless torque and strong economy from a six-cylinder diesel.

B58B30O1 / B58B30B (M40i, 2017–2024) engine

Best Petrol Overall

B58B30O1 / B58B30B (M40i, 2017–2024)

The B58 is BMW's modular straight-six masterpiece -360 PS, 500 Nm, silky smooth, and chain-driven with a robust bottom end. The B58 is widely regarded as one of BMW's most reliable modern engines. In the G01 X3, it's the engine that defines the performance SUV experience.

Who it's for: buyers who want six-cylinder performance with proven reliability. (Model-wide: B58B30 is the benchmark across the BMW range -the G01 offers one of the best expressions of it in an SUV.)

B48B20A (sDrive20i / xDrive20i, early production) engine

Highest Risk

B48B20A (sDrive20i / xDrive20i, early production)

The B48 is a robust engine overall, but early production units can suffer from coolant leaks from the cylinder head vent line (coolant hose) -the plastic becomes brittle and snaps around 60,000 km, dumping coolant instantly. B48TU engines also have documented oil consumption issues.

Who it's for: buyers who want entry-level X3 ownership with a budget for cooling system maintenance.

S58B30A (X3 M / X3 M Competition) engine

Most Expensive Failure

S58B30A (X3 M / X3 M Competition)

The S58 is the high-performance M-division engine -up to 510 PS, twin-turbo, and complex. Turbocharger wear, cooling system demands, and M-specific component costs all add to the ownership burden. A full engine replacement sits at £8,000–£16,000.

Who it's for: X3 M buyers who budget for high-end maintenance and have a specialist they trust.

B47D20A / B47D20B (xDrive20d, 2017–2024) engine

Best Value

B47D20A / B47D20B (xDrive20d, 2017–2024)

The xDrive20d's 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel produces 190 PS and 400 Nm -the most efficient engine in the range, returning up to 50 mpg. The B47 is chain-driven with an accessible front-mounted chain -none of the N47's rear-chain anxiety. It's the X3 you can buy without diesel anxiety.

Who it's for: high-mileage buyers who prioritise economy and reliability.

B48B20A (xDrive30e, 2017–2024) engine

Most Overlooked

B48B20A (xDrive30e, 2017–2024)

The xDrive30e plug-in hybrid combines the B48B20A petrol engine with an electric motor for 292 PS and electric-only range. It's the most fuel-efficient petrol option for urban buyers and offers the lowest company car tax. The B48's cooling system issues are the only caveat.

Who it's for: buyers who want petrol refinement with EV running costs for short journeys.

The G01 rule

A £4,500–£7,500 B58 recon against a £15,000–£45,000 G01 sits at 10–50% of the car's value -well within our 70% BMW threshold. Even the most expensive engine replacement (X3 M Competition S58 at £9,000–£16,000) is only 20–107% of a well-kept G01's value. On a sub-£15,000 high-mileage X3 M, that crosses our 70% threshold -we'd advise walking away. Value the car first. Extended warranty cover is strongly recommended, especially for S58 models and the 48V mild-hybrid system.
