Overview

BMW M3 F80 -Overview

The fifth-generation BMW M3 (codenamed F80) was produced from March 2014 to October 2018, marking a historic departure for the M3 lineage.

For the first time, the M3 was offered exclusively as a four-door saloon -the coupé and convertible versions were spun off into the separate M4 model line (F82/F83). Built on the F30 3 Series platform, the F80 M3 was powered by the S55 twin-turbocharged straight-six engine -a 3.0-litre unit with two mono-scroll turbochargers, closed-deck crankcase design, and Valvetronic variable valve lift. This made the F80 the first turbocharged M3 in history. The engine range was offered in three power outputs: 431 PS (standard), 450 PS (Competition Package from 2016), and 460 PS (CS limited edition from 2017). All F80 M3s feature rear-wheel drive, with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (DCT).

Thin-Data Summary

Thin-Data Fallback mode -one paragraph: The F80 M3 is powered exclusively by the S55B30A twin-turbo straight-six, offered in three power outputs. The standard 431 PS version (2014–2016) is the most common and represents the purest expression of BMW's first turbocharged M3. The Competition Package (2016–2018) raises output to 450 PS with revised suspension and software -it's widely regarded as the sweet spot in the F80 range. The limited-run CS (2017–2018, 460 PS) is the ultimate F80, with additional power and weight reduction, but only 1,200 units were produced. All S55 engines share the same fundamental architecture -a 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six with 550 Nm of torque. The engine is praised for its power delivery and responsiveness, but the S55 has known vulnerabilities: the crank hub can slip under high stress, rod bearing wear is a concern with poor maintenance, and carbon buildup is a common issue on direct-injection engines. For most buyers, the Competition Package offers the best blend of performance, reliability and value.

The F80 rule

An £8,000–£12,000 S55 recon against a £25,000–£50,000 F80 M3 sits at 16–48% of the car's value -within our 70% BMW threshold. Even against a high-mileage £20,000 example, the same recon is 40–60% -a significant financial decision but often viable for a car of this calibre. The F80 M3 holds value well; engine replacement can be justified if the car is otherwise excellent. However, the S55's known weaknesses -crank hub and rod bearings -mean preventative maintenance is strongly recommended.

Common Problems

F80 Engine Replacement Costs -By Engine and Condition

No Generation variance from the Engine Page baseline -no dedicated Engine Page exists for the S55 family yet, so baseline figures are drawn from the EM_Proprietary_Data Table A. Labour hours estimated at 16–22 hours for the S55 engine due to the complexity of the twin-turbo setup and engine bay packaging. The S55 is a high-performance engine requiring specialist tools and expertise.
