Overview
BMW M3 E30 -Overview
The BMW M3 E30 is the first‑generation M3, produced from March 1986 to June 1991.
Originally developed as a homologation model for the German Touring Car Championship (DTM), it required 5,000 units for certification -demand far exceeded that, with nearly 17,000 produced. Designed by Claus Luthe, the E30 M3 featured flared fenders, a unique body kit, and a high‑revving 2.3‑litre S14 four‑cylinder engine derived from the M10 block and M1‑derived cylinder head. Only the doors and roof were shared with the standard E30 3 Series. The engine range evolved from the initial S14B23 through multiple special editions -Evolution I, Evolution II, Cecotto and Ravaglia editions -to the ultimate S14B25 Evolution III and Sport Evolution. A convertible variant was produced in extremely limited numbers (fewer than 800).

Best & Worst Engines

BMW M3 E30 -Ownership Economics
The E30 M3 rule
A £2,500–£5,000 S14 recon against a £25,000–£80,000 E30 M3 sits at 3–20% of the car's value -well within our 70% BMW threshold. These are collector's cars -engine replacement is a preservation cost, not a decision point. For an S14B25 Sport Evolution (values exceeding £100,000), a £5,000–£10,000 engine replacement is a trivial percentage. Value the car first -but on an E30 M3, the car's value almost always justifies the repair.
