The BMW M1 (model code E26) is a mid-engined sports car produced by BMW from 1978 until 1981.
It was BMW's first and -until the i8 -only mass-produced mid-engined car. The M1 was conceived as a homologation special for Group 4 racing, with 400 examples required for approval. The project was initially developed in partnership with Lamborghini, but financial difficulties forced BMW to take over production in April 1978. The body was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, inspired by the 1972 BMW Turbo show car. A version of the M88 engine later powered the E24 M6/M635CSi, E28 M5 and E34 M5.
