Overview
The BMW E12, launched in March 1972, is the first generation of the 5 Series and the first BMW to use the "Series" naming convention. Designed by Paul Bracq, it replaced the New Class saloons and established the executive car formula that BMW still follows today.
Initially powered by four-cylinder M10 engines, a year after launch the first six-cylinder models appeared. By the final years of production, most models used the M30 six-cylinder engine.
