Overview

BMW 2 Series Active Tourer F45 -Overview

The F45 is BMW's first front‑wheel‑drive production car -a five‑door, two‑row compact MPV launched in August 2014.

It marked a significant shift for BMW, moving away from rear‑wheel drive to the UKL2 platform shared with the Mini Countryman, in order to maximise interior space and practicality. Designed to compete directly with the Mercedes‑Benz B‑Class, the Active Tourer offered a spacious cabin, sliding rear seats, and a premium feel. Under the bonnet, the F45 featured BMW's latest modular engine family -the B37, B38, B47 and B48 -across a range of petrol, diesel and plug‑in hybrid variants. A 2018 facelift brought revised styling and updated engine outputs. Production ran until 2021, when the second‑generation U06 replaced it.

Thin-Data Summary

Most dependable: The B48 2.0‑litre four‑cylinder petrol (220i/225i) -BMW's modular four‑cylinder engine -offers strong performance, refinement, and proven durability in both Mini and BMW applications. The B38 1.5‑litre three‑cylinder petrol (218i) is also a solid, efficient choice for daily driving, delivering 134–138 bhp with excellent fuel economy. The B47 2.0‑litre diesel (218d/220d) is a robust, torque‑rich unit with strong fuel efficiency. The B37 1.5‑litre diesel (214d/216d) is efficient but less refined. The 225xe PHEV adds complexity but is generally reliable. Buyers should prioritise a well‑maintained B48 or B38 with documented service history.

The F45 rule

A £2,500–£4,800 B47 recon against a £5,000–£18,000 F45 sits at 14–96% of the car's value. On a sub‑£6,000 F45, that brushes our 70% BMW threshold -we'll honestly tell you to walk away. Against a well‑kept £12,000+ example, the same recon drops to a routine 20–40% -a repair decision, not a financial one. Value the car first.
