1. N47 Timing Chain Failure(Early 418d, 2013–2015)
Symptoms: Rattling noise from the engine on cold start, metallic ticking, engine warning light, loss of power. The chain can snap without warning.
Typical Mileage: 60,000–100,000 miles — failures have been reported from as little as 62,000 miles.
Repair Cost: £1,200–£3,000 (chain, tensioner, guides).
Replacement Cost: N/A — repair only if caught early; catastrophic failure requires full engine replacement.
Urgency: Immediate — if you hear rattle, book an inspection today.
Our recommendation:
The N47's timing chain is mounted at the rear of the engine, making access impossible without removing the engine entirely. The chain's role is to synchronise the pistons and valves — if it snaps, the inlet and exhaust valves collide with the pistons, resulting in massive engine damage including blown pistons, bent valves, and shattered rocker arms. It is recommended to replace the timing chain after 100,000 km, but symptoms may appear sooner. At the first sign of cold-start rattle, book an inspection immediately.
