The turbocharger itself is rarely the root cause; it is almost always a leak or control issue. P0299 on its own is not an immediate engine‑destroying fault, but continued driving with low boost can cause the engine to run richer, potentially damaging the catalytic converter and increasing fuel consumption. If the car has entered limp mode, motorway driving is unsafe due to lack of power.
