P0234 on its own is not an immediate engine‑destroying fault, but repeated overboost events can put excessive stress on the turbocharger, intercooler pipes, and even the engine internals. The ECU will typically limit boost and power to protect the engine, but if the fault is intermittent, the turbo may overshoot when you accelerate hard. If the car has entered limp mode, motorway driving is unsafe due to lack of power.
