The N62 V8 is not an engine you buy for low running costs. With a fitted replacement often exceeding £8,000–£12,000, the 70% scrap threshold means that for many N62-powered 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series and X5 models worth under £12,000, a full engine failure is a financial write-off.
Valve stem seal wear is the most common early failure, typically presenting as blue smoke on start-up and oil consumption between services. This is repairable without a full engine replacement, with typical costs of £3,000–£6,000 depending on the variant and specialist labour rates.
Cooling system failures (water pump, expansion tank, plastic hoses) are the second most common cluster. These are far cheaper to prevent than to repair after an overheat event — a water pump replacement costs around £500–£1,000, while a head gasket or block failure from overheating will push you towards the full replacement bracket.

Valve stem seal wear is the most frequently reported failure, causing blue smoke on start-up and oil consumption. It typically appears between 70,000 and 120,000 miles. Replacement of the seals is a labour-intensive job (often requiring the cylinder heads to be removed) but is far cheaper than a full engine replacement.
In our 2025 data, the N62 generated 440 enquiries compared to the N63’s 440 (identical volume), but the failure patterns differ. The N62’s primary failure is valve stem seals, while the N63 suffers from more expensive hot-vee-related issues (valve seals, turbo coolant lines, battery drain). Most specialists consider the N62 less catastrophic than the N63, but both are costly to own.
A reconditioned N62 supply-only costs £6,000–£10,000 [EM-QUOTE]. With R&R labour (16–22 hours at ~£65–£100/hr), a fitted replacement is typically £8,000–£12,000 at an independent specialist. Main dealer costs are significantly higher.
Check for blue smoke on start-up (valve stem seals), coolant leaks (water pump, expansion tank, hoses), and service history — regular oil changes with the correct spec are critical. A pre-purchase inspection by a BMW specialist is strongly recommended.
BMW’s 70% scrap threshold applies. If the fitted replacement cost exceeds 70% of the vehicle’s current market value, scrapping is usually the better financial decision. For a typical 5 Series (E60) worth £4,000–£8,000, a £8,000 engine replacement is rarely worth it.
