How we built the decision split dataset.
Source: Internal CRM quote-request data from EnginesMarket.co.uk and EngineFinders.co.uk, combined. Full calendar year 2025. 24,650 unique quote requests across all brands; BMW‑specific data was extracted for 33 distinct model lines.
Decision flags: Each BMW model was assigned a flag (Safe, Watch, Scrap Threshold) based on the 70% scrap threshold defined in our framework. The threshold compares the lowest viable reconditioned supply‑only cost (from Table A) against the typical UK market value of the vehicle (from Auto Trader, Motors.co.uk, etc.). If the fitted replacement cost exceeds 70% of the vehicle’s value, the model is flagged as Scrap Threshold. Watch indicates 40–70% of value, Safe indicates under 40%.
Limitations: Values are based on typical examples; rare, low‑mileage, or collectable cars may justify repair even if flagged as Scrap. Always consult a specialist for a personalised assessment.

As the inaugural “Owner Decision Split” report, we are setting the benchmark for future comparisons. The 2025 data reflects a market where used car values remained relatively stable compared to 2024, while reconditioned engine costs have seen modest increases (2–5%) due to parts availability and labour rates. This has pushed some borderline models (e.g., X5 E70 with N63) from Watch toward the Scrap threshold, though no model changed flag category year‑on‑year as we have no prior data.
Going forward, we will track how shifts in vehicle values and replacement costs alter the decision split. Early indicators suggest that newer platforms (G‑series) will remain Safe for the foreseeable future, while ageing E‑series and early F‑series will increasingly fall into Scrap as their values depreciate.

We take the lower end of the reconditioned supply‑only cost, add typical R&R labour (based on hours from Table A), and compare that total to the typical vehicle value from UK market data. If the fitted cost is under 40% of value, it’s Safe; 40–70% is Watch; over 70% is Scrap Threshold.
Modern G‑series models (G20, G30, G01, G05, G11) are almost all Safe because their high retained values easily absorb replacement costs. The B‑series engines also have lower reconditioned costs than older N‑series.
