VANOS is an acronym for Variable Nockenwellen Steuerung (variable camshaft control). It adjusts the position of the camshaft(s) relative to the crankshaft, optimising valve timing for different engine speeds and loads. The system uses oil pressure to actuate a helical gear mechanism that rotates the camshaft.

The VANOS system uses engine oil pressure and a set of solenoids (or phase adjusters) to control the position of the camshaft. The camshaft is connected to the camshaft timing chain sprocket via a helical gear arrangement. When oil pressure is applied to one side of the gear, the gear rotates relative to the sprocket, advancing or retarding the camshaft timing.
On Valvetronic-equipped engines, an additional stepper motor adjusts the intake valve lift continuously, further reducing the need for throttle control.
