The lower satisfaction among used-engine buyers was tied to uncertainty about the unit's remaining life — a psychological factor, not a mechanical failure pattern. Scrappers reported the lowest overall satisfaction (52%), with many citing regret and difficulty finding a replacement vehicle of similar performance at a comparable price [EM-SURVEY].
For E60 M5 owners specifically, satisfaction among repairers was 82% — lower than the average, reflecting the higher running costs and complexity of keeping an S85-powered car on the road. F80 M3 and F10 M5 owners reported satisfaction rates above 90%.

Across the 50+ cases, the pattern is clear: E60 M5 owners scrapped at 2.5× the rate of F10 M5 owners. The S85 V10's high repair costs and lower retained values make it a financially difficult car to keep on the road. For F80 M3 and F10 M5 owners, the higher average value (£18,000–£35,000) kept most repairs below the 70% threshold, even for S63 engines with higher recon costs. G80 M3 owners, with values above £40,000, almost never scrapped [PATTERN DATA].
The 32% who scrapped weren't necessarily wrong. For many E60 M5 owners with high-mileage S85 engines, a reconditioned engine at £8,000–£12,000 would have exceeded the vehicle's value, and our own framework would have recommended scrap. However, the 16% who regretted scraping suggests that some might have been better off repairing if they had considered the total cost of replacing the vehicle with a comparable M car. A rebuild, where feasible, offered a middle ground — but only 8% chose it, likely due to limited specialist availability for S85 and S63 engines.
