BMW does not specify a fixed timing chain replacement interval on any 1 Series engine [PATTERN DATA]. The chain is designed to last the life of the engine. However, real-world data from specialists and owner experience indicates that N47 diesel engines (particularly in E8x and early F20) are known for chain stretch and tensioner failure, typically between 60,000–120,000 miles [PATTERN DATA], with a distinctive cold-start rattle being the primary warning sign.
